Oct 16, 2004 10:34PM PDT

Hi out there.I have a laptop that is just out of warranty and when I click on any program it runs for a while and then shut down. When I boot up again it shuts down in a shorter time.On surfing the web I find that this is a problem with h.p. laptops and that there after sales service is poor.Could it be the heatsink, cpu fan,or power supply to the motherboard.Hope someone can help

Sorry, but after warranty support isn't poor, it's jsut expensive. What many discover is that there is no free "please look at this" or "can you tell me what to do". And the result is about what you post.

Repairs run from 10% to full price of the laptop and this is why people feel the service is poor.

As to your issue, you have to make the decision that it's worth paying to have it fixed or not. I can't make this decision for you. It is possible that you could fix it yourself, but it may involve you opening up the laptop, finding a loose heatsink, dead fan and hunting down a replacement part.

Another complaint about all the laptop makers is the parts issues. You can't buy just the part you want because HP/others don't buy just that part. The LCD is a find example. You can't get just a cable since they buy the LCD, covers, power modules, CFT and more... with the cable attached. This leads to more fingerpointing that parts are hard to get...

Best of luck solving your issues. As to finding complaints, you'll find that with all makers since it's the nature of "how it is".

if you were only having system shutdown while accessing the internet that was the symptoms of the blaster virus / welchia virus, etc which would immediately infect any computer connecting to the internet if you did not get the patch from another computer, run the patch and then connect to windows update and your antivirus company to download the final updates to block this system shotdown in the future.

You say you are having system shutdown with programs while not connected to the internet. If this is the case you likely do have have some sort of hardware issue.
