Didn't your recorder come with a user manual?

Hello I have a pro Gy DV300 3ccd camcorder. It is a Mini DV format with Fire wire.
can anyone tell me if I can use the firewire to record directly to a firewire port on a laptop instead of tape

Yes I did. it mentions an add on plate to use SD card slot. But even then Its not clear if this is a data store or a video record option. Can anyone clarify?
Thanks
Assuming the "add on plate" to which you refer is the JVC KA-DV300: http://pro.jvc.com/pro/attributes/prodv/manual/kadv300.pdf
it allows for IP network connectivity and use of a CF (Compact Flash) memory card - not SD memory. See page 16.
And yes, pretty much any camcorder with a a working fire port can have its video recorded directly by a computer over firewire... assuming the computer has a working firewire port... Though it may depend on the computer and the video editor as to whether this will work reliably.
