I see you got an answer on the PCWorld forums. Yes, if your son got water inside the connector, I suppose it could have shorted when he plugged it in. (I won't ask why he was working with the computer with his hands dripping wet.)
But another possibility is a static discharge at some time -- I know of such drives being destroyed in this manner.
As the drive would not work in your system either, I fear the data on it is toast.
Hi,
I bought my son the GXT 1 GB USB 2.0 drive last Xmas. He loved it and used it to store his assignments to bring to school.
Now the device is not recognised when it is plugged into the USB port of the PC. He says yesterday he unplugged it when his hand was wet, and that's when the problem began.
I'm not sure what the problem is, but does anyone know if it's recoverable, and if yes, how?
Thanks.
