Question

GTX 980 G1 Gaming no video on Gigabyte EX58-UD3R

Sep 12, 2017 4:53AM PDT

Hi! New to forum! Hope to have a good experience here.

So, I own 2 X58 MoBos. One is used by me and the other by my brother. They are as follows: ASUS X58 Sabertooth and Gigabyte EX58-UD3R.

At some point this summer, I had a power surge and the 980 refused to send signal to the monitor. That was fixed by a local PC repair shop. Everything worked fine, until the EX58-UD3R refused to POST with the 980 inside. So, bought the X58 Sabertooth. The Graphics Card worked again, until recently when I swapped it for the EX58- UD3R back, because the USB ports get power even when PC is off.

The EX58- UD3R surely works, tested. It was in my brother's PC until yesterday. His specs are: i7 950, GTX 660 Gigabyte, 8 GB of RAM and that's all that matters. Mine are: Xeon X5650, GTX 980 Gigabyte, 12 GB of RAM. The 980 and the Xeon work in the Sabertooth and the 660 with the i7 work just fine on both.

I'm thinking of 2 possible issues: the EX58-UD3R MoBo has an older BIOS (I tried to reflash it when it refused to POST with my Xeon and 980), which doesn't support the Xeon.

The other cause is my case. His case is a Zalman R1 and mine is a Deepcool Dukase V2. Thinking about a possible short with something inside my case.

Any help diagnosing?

Adding CPU microcode to BIOS version
Sep 12, 2017 10:14AM PDT

I know there is a tool that adds CPU microcode to the BIOS ROM. Is there a microcode for this specific CPU on the Internet to download?

The most common short I encounter when folk change motherboards is the standoff mounts. I don't know why these continue to be a problem. Remove all mounts except what is needed for the board of choice.

But if a board doesn't work with your CPU, you get to address that. Putting a CPU that's not on the support list will not find people that will rush to your aid.

Remove the problem mobo from the case and set it on a piece of cardboard.
Does it post?
Your on shaky ground with that unsupported cpu/mobo combo.

bios flashing
Sep 12, 2017 10:18AM PDT

That's usually done with BIOS flashing, and the program flashed should be from your mobo manufacturer, the latest possible.

If there is, it usually comes from the motherboard maker.

We are now into a new age where editing the BIOS is just outside of the usual skill sets. And MrBios is no more. http://mrbios.com/

Version FK for EX58-UD3R rev.1.6. I found the microcodes on the BIOS Mods forum, but my account has just been created and apparently, needs to be moderated. I also found that tool. Can anyone upload those microcodes somewhere? Preferably on Drive, as I noticed it works 99% of the time.

That forum may not be the right one.

"Please note that we DO NOT take requests for these types of mods. Full modding credit goes to Wims BIOS Forum - We are merely archiving their mods."

Wims writes " A forum to ask questions about bios updates, bios problems, bios settings and much more!"

You may want to get to the right forum.

I got a 404 there.

Strange. 404 Not Found

Anyhow, if there is someone with that data, it's there or at Wims.

How I got in
Sep 12, 2017 11:16AM PDT

Go to the main page, and on the left side there's some ERROR word and a link near it and I clicked on that and it totally bypassed the need to be logged in. I then ran a search for his thread and I now realize the link I posted is the same he'd given. It's an older thread there he resurrected.

I'll fix their bum link now.

I was indeed moderated. I downloaded those CPU microcodes, now struggling to get them into the BIOS file. The CPU actually is the problem, with the i7 950 everything worked. Let's hope I can get those microcodes in the BIOS file, and then flash it.

As for the one who said I might brick the MoBo, you're wrong. The Gigabyte boards always have 2 BIOSes, a main one and one for backup, which flashes the main one. So, they can't get bricked so easy.

I'd seek BIOS help in BIOS forums.
Sep 12, 2017 12:49PM PDT

Here I stick to the straight and narrow. While I personally have edited a few BIOS over the years the problem is that I had to figure it out and the instructions were not exactly right so my background in electronic designs, coding and more were used to figure it out.

As the tools have changed you should stick to forums that folk do this a lot more than I do.

IOW, my answer is to stick with the maker's bios or get a board that supports the CPU or a CPU that fits this board.

Imagine the poor soul that inherits this system and updates the BIOS. Blammo.

I don't advise setting booby traps for others like this.

Ok, thank you for your advice. Please post this one more time as another comment to my thread and not as a reply to one of the comments, so I can mark it as solution.

Imagine PCs that need you to do this in the mass market. That would end the PC fast.

Why does this remind me of the Chromega III wristwatch. "It's like asking a stranger for the time!"?

Thank you for understanding how this works.

There's a lot of info to digest when you attempt a BIOS edit. My edits were mostly to add WiFi cards to the BIOS whitelist and I was amazed at how instructions were "almost there' but not to the point your everyday computer "advanced" user could get it done.

I'm fortunate that my background includes single board computer design so I was able to tap that experience and "find a way."

Here, I'm going with the straight and narrow of "use the BIOS from the maker" and for BIOS editing you are going to get more answers from the BIOS MOD forums.

Thanks for understanding this.
