Question

GTX 1070 isn't performing well. Please help!

Sep 3, 2016 9:08PM PDT

As the title says, I am having problems with my setup. I'm getting major FPS drops and inconsistent frames in just about any game I play.

My Rig:
EVGA GTX 1070 Superclocked
Intel i7 4790k
8GB RAM
Windows 10 64bit
Running on a 1080p monitor.

I see people running games like battlefield 1 at 100-110fps while I'm getting 25-80fps. Please help!

Got the latest driver for that gpu?
I see one dated 8-30-16.

Got the latest bios and drivers for your mobo?

Tell about the ram.
Number of sticks and the speed of each stick.

I've clean installed my drivers with DDU and updated them today.
Same with the mobo.

For ram I have G.Skill RipjawX 8gb single stick 1600mhz

A better mix is to install a 2x4GB @ 1600 kit.
It should not make a major difference but every little bit helps when gaming.
Just be sure to install the sticks in the proper slots to enable dual channel.

You did not mention the bios for this unknown mobo you have.

Sorry about that. I updated the drivers for the mobo not the bios. I'm a little afraid to touch that.

The mobo is a Gigabyte B85M-D3H micro atx
Bios version F14

Version f15 shows support for w10.

Just read the how to update at the gigabyte site.

That's a drag chute or dragging anchor to the machine performance.

I think you need to move to pairs. Be sure to NEVER MIX make, model sticks in a machine.

Thanks you!

So, I went out and got another stick of ram to run in dual channel and that partially solved my issue, I'm no longer getting heinous fps dips so the game runs at about a constant 70 fps. My next step is to completely replace my motherboard as one of the technicians at memory express said that my motherboard could very well be bottlenecking my gpu and cpu. Thanks for the tip!

DO NOT CHANGE THAT BOARD.

The tech is way out of date. Way back in the first gen i5 models we could drive a trio of video cards. Your CPU is steps beyond that, same for motherboard so they are probably well meaning but need to be ignored.

Example:

"Our tests demonstrate fairly little difference between a $225 LGA 1155 Core i5-2500K and a $1000 LGA 2011 Core i7-3960X, even when three-way graphics card configurations are involved. It turns out that memory bandwidth and PCIe throughput don't hold back the performance of existing Sandy Bridge-based machines. "

I'm still not getting the performance I expect and that I see other people getting with my setup. The dual channel ram helped some to keep the experience more smooth, however I still don't come close to those frames I see people on youtube getting.

And I don't see any harm in getting a new board, since I will just give my old one to my brother.

It's your money so do what you want.
I think your going to open a can of worms and gain nothing.

Ram....was this stick of ram you bought an exact match for the old stick..make and model?

Did you fit it into the proper slot to enable dual channel?

Did you update the bios to get w10 support?

Thanks

I appreciate your concern, this is a bit of science for me that will benefit my brother in the end. I'll let you know what happens!

Both ram sticks are the same g.skill 1600mhz sticks.

I don't own your rig.

And I can't guess your mix of software.

In a recent discussion I took a deep look at a SPECCY report and came up with 10 items to tackle. Not to my surprise they responded that "it can't be that" and have almost lost my help there.

But let's say you want to change the motherboard and CPU, sure, do that.

Use https://www.reddit.com/r/PCMasterRace/wiki/builds as source for that new system.
