The space on your hard drive is running short and that could be part of the problem with scandisk. In order to clean things up, please click on the link below and follow the steps (Parts 1-4) to clean out some of the junk. It asks for another Scandisk and defrag to be done after you do the cleanup. Please attempt these again, per the instructions at the link. If Scandisk won't run, just stop the process.:

Next, because you need to identify the video driver correctly, try this:
RIGHT click on "My Computer", choose "Properties" from the menu, then click on the "Device Manager" tab. When that opens click on the + sign next to the "Display" adapter listing and you will see a specific device listing. Tell us the name of that device. Now click once on that device to highlight it, then click on the "Properties" button at the bottom of the window. When that loads, give us the name again, the "Manufacturer's name". Then click on the "Driver" tab and give us the "Provider" and the "Date".

I have stopped the system scan as per your advice....I retrieved the following info from computer....main drive=c....used space....4,654,792,704 bytes....4.33gb....free space....55,358,586,880 bytes....51.5gb
display properties....settings....2 colors, 16 colors.....640x480 pixels....bar does not move
display adapter....standard PCI Graphics adapter-VGA...date 4-23-99....version number 4-10-1998....
running with windows 98se 4-10-222.A
128.0mb ram
AMD-KG 3D processor.....
now what....at this point I would just be happy to get the 256 color option back.....
