Grey rectangular box around my desktop icons, vista laptop.

Hey, my desktop icons have a grey rectangular box around them. This happened while I was playing maplestory, I was trying to say something to another player and it wouldn't go into the textbox. The keyboard keys worked, but not when i tried typing them into the chatbox. Then I closed Maplestory, and i started testing if the keys worked in any other textboxes. I tried opening an application the white grey box came around it. Eventually, it came around several icons. I have tried rebooting, making sure my shift or caps lock button isn't stuck, checked all the settings for the desktop. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated
