Graphics On my Laptop

Sep 22, 2004 9:19AM PDT

Hi, I was wondering if someone could help me with this, I just ordered my new Compaq Presario V2000 laptop with 1.6 ghz Centrino 512 mb and Intel extreme graphics 2 however I was wondering, can I expand my Graphics, can I buy an Nvidia or Ati graphic card so I can expand my video card, I mean This is my first laptop and I am worried that not all games I have can be supported by this laptop, I am not searching for anything amazing when it comes to game graphics, but I wouldnt want to see for example My FlightSimulator 2004 going slow, could some one help me with this?

Thanks.

That is a new notebook that has the PCcard remote control to allow you to play DVD's and CD's without powering up the notebook. It also has a 14.1" LCD.

That noteobook was made to appeal to the Apple crowd as it is a nice looking notebook and lightweight.

Unfortunately, you need to buy the HPZT3000 or Compaq X1000 (see hpshopping) 15.4" widescreen notebook to get the dedicated video ATI 9200 64mb.

No, you cannot upgrade a notebooks video like a desktop.

That is the reason the importance of buying a notebook with dedicated video RAM has been stressed nearly every week on these Cnet message boards over the past 3 months.

If you do want to play some games you can return the notebook you have (30 day return if you ordered it from HPshopping -- if you ordered it retal you will have to check with the retailer) and either get the HPZT3000, Compaq X1000 (see X1000forums.com), Toshiba M35S456 or the Acer 2025 (2000 series with ATI 9700 128mb dedicated video option). All of these 4 are Pentium M Centrino notebooks with dedicated video RAM.

Note, you can get the Toshiba M35S456 retail with the Trubrite LCD or get the HP Briteview LCD by ordering the HPZT3000 or Compaq X1000 custom online.

For people who mostly web surf, use Microsoft office, etc. the V2000 is a nice notebook but you are stuck with integrated (shared) video that also takes away from your system RAM.

Actually if you got the Compaq instead of the HP model you may not even have the built in PC card for the remote control so you had better check on that also.

There are some posts on that over at X1000forums.com.

Look at the difference in specifications yourself at hpshopping for the 2 sister notebooks with the 14.1" LCD and the DVD/CD functions without booting the notebook.
