Graphics not properly loading in IE 8 nor Firefox

Jun 2, 2010 4:57AM PDT

I just reinstalled Windows XP Media Center Edition (Dell Pentium, 2007 vintage) on my daughter's computer, I got the chipset & the network card drivers from Dell Support, and everthing was fine when I gave it to her (although I had not finished Windows Updates, but I have now done so, and I think they are complete. BUT, the display in either browser is problematic (like some Active-X thing--I don't know how to describe it): graphics are not displayed properly, and everything has those rectangular frames, if you know what I mean. Windows updates, I think, are complete, Flashplayer is downloaded, Java is downloaded. Where's my troubleshooting on this, please?

Give us an example please

'Don't know how to describe it' is a common problem with these things, but perhaps a screen print would help us.

Open Firefox, and either visit a site that shows the problem clearly, or you can goto Google and search a term that will give lots of images, eg I often search for just ISS , (the International Space Station), hit Search, then click the "Images" link at the top. This will list results in image thumbnail format.

Take a screen print, paste it into Paint and save it, then upload it to your favorite image hosting site like ImageShack, PhotoBucket, Flickr, etc. Make sure you can see the full image, then post that url web page address here.

Is it just browsers, or does this system have problems displaying other things, like photos, videos, etc?

That's strange

Thanks for that screenprint link, but when I see it in my browser, the image looks fine to me.

If you are using your PC at work, did you look at this image yourself? If so, how did it look?

If I am right and that image/screenprint is fine, then it looks to me like the problem is not the browsers but the display itself. But then you said you everything was fine when you gave the computer to your daughter, so I'm a little stumped.

One thing. You mentioned chipset and network drivers, but did you also install the video card drivers? If not it is likely the display has defaulted to VGA, and with that screen resolution will be low.

1. Maybe you can tell my why replies have a blank subject line. Most threads that I am used to capture the original title, etc.
2. If you look closer at this, you will see that the "frames," or whatever you call them the entry dialog boxes, where you put in values and press "send," and the buttons for such sending, etc. are not really displaying properly. Just about any page you go to does not display graphics properly, etc.

Look at these:

The images are okay, but the graphics is wrong.

There is no facebook graphic on the right.

Open a new tab in IE 8: it doesn't look like this.

Grif's suggestions are good.

In reply to your question about subject titles.

I believe that this was blocked in the forum software used here. We would get replies and replies with Re: xxx, Re; Re; Re; Re; xxx, and so on, and it does not help 'first glance' viewers to see what the poster is about to say. If you change the "Forum display:" to Tree view at the top right of each discussion you perhaps can see what we mean.

Another thing that you may want to look at are the "Clear type" settings. In XP's Display Properties, Appearance tab, then the Effects button, make sure Clear type is selected under "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts", as well as "Show shadows under menus".

That might help the appearance of the web sites.

A Couple Of Things To Try
Jun 2, 2010 9:18AM PDT

1. Check for ad-blockers of various types as they can prevent certain websites from opening, which includes the pictures at those websites.. If you're using a special HOSTS file which blocks advertisements, which include a number of embedded graphics, then access the "C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc folder and rename the HOSTS file to HOSTS.txt. See if the graphics now return correctly. It should apply to both IE8 and Firefox.

2. In Internet Explorer 8 make sure it is set to "show pictures" by clicking, in the upper left, on Tools-Internet Options-Advanced tab, then scroll to the "Multimedia" section and UNCHECK the box next to "Show image download placeholders" and place a CHECK mark in the "Show pictures" box, then click on "apply", then OK.

In Firefox, click on "Tools-Options-Content tab, then make sure the "Load Images Automatically" box is CHECKED.

Hope this helps.

None of the above worked
Jun 3, 2010 4:50AM PDT

I applied the suggestions in replies 6 and 7 and none of them changed the appearance. Now, I am not a pro, but I have observed this, I THINK, when some security setting was wrong, or some Active-X or something. Is that an avenue I should be investigating?

Next step.

I had asked about installing video drivers, but I'm not sure if you saw that question.

Can you check, or get your daughter to check, what screen resolution the monitor is set at at the moment?

Firefox Doesn't Use ActiveX.. So...
Jun 3, 2010 5:04AM PDT

..Firefox doesn't run ActiveX controls, (unless a special plugin is applied) and if both programs are having the same problem, then it's not ActiveX.

Hope this helps.

same problem - solution yet
Aug 29, 2010 4:11AM PDT

Hi, I have exactly the same problem and can't figure out what's the solution. Is there a solution yet? By the way, the same problem also occurs in some other programs such as Windows Media Player.
