Graphics are out of order!?!Need help ASAP!!!

May 22, 2005 11:27AM PDT

I have a built to order notebook from "Clevo" with a 3.06 GHz processor, ati mobility radeon 9000 64 Mb,1 Gb ram and windows xp pro sp2 installed.A few days ago as i was playing Half life 2 graphics went completely crazy and my notebook went off. Now,when i turn it on,while it is booting there are blue and red vertical lines on screen where it should be just the black screen of windows xp loading. My desktop icons don't appear anymore except from their names, any video i play has low quality and gaming is out of the question.Even if i try to play flash games on the web with minimum settings the notebook just goes off.I am going crazy with this situation and i need help!!!

Update on the problem!!!

I have tried several restorations but all of them failed ''your system cannot be restored to the date given''.I've checked for viruses but its clean,no hardware conflict exists,i haven't made any changes to the graphics card driver-its the latest one available-and even when i rollback to a previous driver it doesn't fix the problem.Should i consider formating and reinstalling windows or is there any other idea????

Yes. See if your XP has a repair install feature.

I can't tell since your post was very light on details.

The words in red.

They read:

"Note: If you're asking for technical help, please be sure to include all your system info, including operating system, model number, and any other specifics related to the problem."

Imagine if with each member's post if the first responder gets to ask for such information. These forums would crumble.

You are part of the solution and part of the team to fix your issue. This is not a pay tech support.

System Info(now i followed the words in red =) )
May 23, 2005 11:01AM PDT

model "Clevo D470W"
intel pentium 4 3.06 processor
1 GB ram
Ati mobility radeon 9000 64 MB
dvd-rw teac
60 Gb HDD
dont't know about the motherboard
OS windows xp pro sp2
idle cpu temp 63oC (temp with cooler pad used)
idle HDD temp 38oC (temp with cooler pad used)

Gaming or other "heavy programs" cause the laptop to shut in a matter of minutes.Graphics of games in particular and other programs(3-D text screensaver for example)are just a big mess.Video quality is awful. There are no viruses in the system and no hardware conflict. So far i tried these:
1)decrease the temperature with a laptop cooler pad but had no success.
2)install new drivers for the graphics card or rollback to an older one but it didn't fix the problem
3)do a clean install of windows but the problem is still there.

A few things.

1. It's a common issue with desktop replacement laptops with full bore P4s. You need to contact the maker to get them to correct the failure. I may have missed if this was not an option.

2. The usual causes are failed fans, dust, lint in and around the CPU heatsink or the CPU heatsink is not in its place or someone forgot some thermal paste.

3. The video card and maybe the motherboard drivers are NOT installed with Microsoft's Windows XP CDs. Again, I may have missed what version of XP and by who these CDs are from, but from Microsoft you have to download and install all the drivers just like you did in all prior versions of Windows. Look to Clevo's web site for the XP drivers so you get the latest.

I reinstalled windows xp pro sp2 and all the drivers but the original problem is still there. One of my friends thinks that i might have burned down my graphics card.Is that a possibility???

Not yet. Here's why.

Not much detail about the XP SP2 CD has been shared. It's well known that there are very few video drivers on Microsoft's CD.

As such, you get to do as we have for over 10 years of Windows. Download and install the latest for motherboard and video and hope that's it.

In the case of some RESTORE CDs the vendor packs the drivers in so such arcane knowledge and skill is not required.

Best of luck,

Bob
