Saw some video and looks like they toss small pebbles instead of rocks and stones. Also tossed at a wall, although I guess a few could get beaned by a pebble or two at times. Seems however it was at a different gathering point just beside the stoning place where the "stampede" took place, but it was less "stampede" and more a "crushing", sort of like happens at stores here on Black Friday.

I've seen people flogging themselves with little twigs....I haven't seen anyone willingly getting someone else to do the "symbolic flogging" with any amount of force.
