Question

GPU/Something Else Dying?

Got a new computer 3 years ago. Within a year certain games would get weird lines across the screen or little squares. Then the problem would go away for months and come back.

Now the title screen of the game I'm playing is stuttering back and forth. Almost looks like a computer screen issue, like the picture is going in and out. Sometimes I'll just get a screen of stripes or a solid color with the sound still going. Sometimes it crashes.

When I right click on a file, for example "Documents" the little menu will disappear as soon as I move my cursor over the different options....like "properties". Is this all a GPU issue? Sometimes the game works fine and the temperature is normal.

Seems like it glitches out more on the title screen and menu more than the actual gameplay. The only thing that frightened me is that after playing a game, the background on my desktop started stuttering back and forth. One time I unplugged the screen and plugged it back in and it looked better but then froze afterward.

What does it sound like? GPU? Some kind of connection error? Thanks

Heat maybe

Open the side of computer and when this happens, quickly look to see if the GPU fan is running. While in there, clean it and the heatsink from any "dust bunnies" on it. Also make sure the card is fully inserted in the slot, because sometimes the cable pulls them out a bit.

Yes, a typical GPU sign.

But I don't read much about your maintenance or what model machine and cards. Some of them were well known that they needed a re-do on the heatsink compound, but was your card one of the known ones?
