Question

GPS or GNSS in HP Stream 8

Jun 24, 2015 3:25PM PDT

I'm considering a HP Stream 8 for my first tablet. I don't play games (does Solitare count?), so reading ebooks, news stories online, browsing the web, and a few small business files are really all I'm looking for. This device has the same OS (W8.1) that my work computer has, so this is why I'm leaning to it.

However, I would like to use this device in lieu our somewhat dated GPS device. Microsoft support said it did not have GPS, but I've read elsewhere that it had something called GNSS.

Does anyone have one of these, or knowledge of it, and can it be used as a "GPS" device, regardless of what acronym it may be called?

Good time to test HP support.

I see a contact us now at http://store.hp.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ContentView?eSpotName=Stream8&storeId=10151&langId=-1&catalogId=10051

If they don't answer, imagine when you have paid them and need answers.

BTW, I own a Windows 8.1 7 inch tablet and it's pretty horrible. Just wait till you get into control panel areas that were not rewritten for tablet use. It's clear that Microsoft invested too much in Metro and too little overall.

Also, with Windows 10 in just weeks, I repeat a DO NOT BUY RECOMMENDATION on W7/8 tablets.

I checked this link

I checked this link and evidently it does have GPS. But I asked this question of Microsoft support and they said no. I suppose I could send it back if it didn't suit me.

Thanks,

Johm

I thought Windows 8 was written for touch screen, but I'm not very tech minded, so this may not what you mean at all.

And isn't Windows 10 a free upgrade for W8 users now?

I went to the link you provided, it was the HP store. I was shopping at Microsoft and they answered (chat) immediately. And maybe I'm missing your point entirely.

But to get back to my original question, does your windows tablet have any sort of GPS applications, or capability?

Is Windows 8 and after a few days it became clear that Microsoft recycled a lot of code. Not just code behind the scenes where it may not matter but the simple process (?) of pairing a bluetooth mouse and keyboard pulled up an old Windows XP to 7 control that was thoroughly inappropriate for a tablet.

Maybe 10 will fix stuff like that but if you think 8 is for tablets, you only need to try a few. The Microsoft Surface Pro slides around this by using it's optional keyboard/mousepad.
