I use the government funded agency of NASA as an example. Not only has it opened my eyes to the wonders of space, but I credit it for having a home computer, for instance. Sure, I know there have been instances of mismanagement, but I'm not sure they have been as grievous as some made by private contractors.
The plan seems to focus on addressing different sectors of research such as in energy and engineering. It recognizes the importance of preparing the younger generation to assume those roles. It is often said that our schools have fallen behind in math and science.
Maybe, just maybe, more youngsters will be inspired when they learn of the research vistas that could be open to them, like they were inspired to be astronauts years ago. And there could be some men of science out there who have some truly innovative ideas, but lack a venue to further them.
