If system restore fails, it usually fails for good until we turn it off and on again which does wipe out old restore points.
About Avast. It's not perfect. None are! Try Grif's advice at http://forums.cnet.com/7726-19411_102-5070551.html?tag=posts;msg5070551 to be sure what those scans can find are found and gone.
Again, I would not fret the loss of System Restore. And after a decade of fixing XP, when SR fails, it's usually gone in 99.99% of the cases. (except for that Norton issue.)
As to Microsoft Word, the usual advice is to start Word in it's SAFE MODE (see google at WORD SAFE MODE) and if that works, look at suggestions. If not, uninstall and reinstall Word.
OS: Windows XP PRO Browser: Google Chrome
Last week I tried to play some songs on Windows Media player (WMP), songs saved at Library, some of the songs had a blue circle on the their left with an exclamation mark inside it, those songs cannot be played, and by clicking on any of them the following message comes up:WMP cannot find the file. If you are trying to play, burn or sync an item that is in your library, the item might point to a file that has been removed, renamed or deleted.
I did nothing of the suggestions.
The message gives two options, close and Web help which I choose, and that took me to WMP error code which is C00D1197, I googled the code and that took me to many links I choose the first link which is : RESTORE GUARD, http://www.restoreguard.com/p/0x-C00D1197.html?keyword=C00D1197&gclid=CMuM64CHl6cCFYVN3god71FJoQ, and downloaded the program, ( I wish I did not) because there was Windows logo at the top, I wrongly thought it was a Windows program, it was not, this program contains a very advanced virus and you can imagine what it did to my computer.
First, at Microsoft words, I have serrated green lines vertical and horizontal around saved documents, second when trying to log on any link I get the following message: Google Chrome has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. And the three known options: Debug, Send an error, Don't send. I managed to go round it by getting to log to URLs through Internet Explorer, but ofcourse this is not a solution.
The next thing I tried was to restore it to an earlier date, no success, so I went to safe mode and from there I restored it to an earlier date, and bingo success back to normal, no serrated lines, and log on to any link normally, did a virus scan and cleaned my computer, my antivirus program is Avast, now according to Avast there are no Viruses.
Now the big shock, on Monday I again got the serrated line when I used Microsoft Words, so I tried to do what I did before restore it to an earlier date, no success, and the following message came up: Restoration incomplete, your computer cannot restored to date ---, no changes have been made to your computer. I choose another date the same result; I carried the restoration also in safe mode, the same result and same message, again I carried out a computer antivirus scan. The result is clean no viruses.
Finally, I still can log on any link, and the computer is functioning normally, except for the Microsoft Words and cannot restore to earlier dates, so my computer does not restore.
I hope I have put you in the picture, and hopefully there is a solution, how to reactivate restoration.
Is this the longest email you ever got?
