Got a virus by the name of JV/GoPlanet

Nov 18, 2003 5:54AM PST

Hey--

Well where do I begin?? My computer is a Hewlett Packard Pavillion XE813. Windows Me. I ran a virus scan because I knew my computer wasn't running right. Sure enough, I found a virus by the name of JV/GoPlanet.reg. This is in one of my cabinet files. Bummer. Can anyone give me some information as to how to get this out??? I would be eternally grateful.

Seabolt, Which Antivirus Are You Running?

It appears like you're using McAfee (please tell us which version you're using and the scan engine and virus defintion number) and I'm guessing that it found an "unwanted program" from your computer. An "unwanted program" is a "heuristics" detection of programs that are "spyware" types. They aren't "true" viruses. What is the name of the file that it found and where is it located?

It may, or may not be a "dangerous" file. Try disabling the "Unwanted Programs" detections and see if it is found again.

Hope this helps and let us know what you find.

...that the file is a "false postive". We've found a few at the McAfee forums which aren't truly a 'bad' registry file. You'll notice below that I've listed the actual McAfee info, but it would still help to know the file name and location, so we can make a better determination.

Hope this helps.

Click on the link below to read about the trojan:

JV/Goplanet
http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_100803.htm

The trojan entries are created by a Java applet which was probably run at a website while you were surfing. Read the article above and eliminate the registry keys that it mentions. In addition, make sure to run a full system scan and delete any infected files that are found.

After you've done that, make sure to set your "Internet Explorer/Internet Options/Security tab/Internet icon/Security tab/ActiveX Controls and Plugins" selections to "prompt". Leave all the "unsafe options at "Disable", but set the other ACtiveX Controls and Plugins" to "prompt" or "disable". This will stop those types of Java applets from running automatically.

Hope this helps.
