google toolbar: browse by name stops working

Jan 4, 2006 5:14AM PST

Windows XP pro and IE. Have used the google toolbar for quite some time. Recently, the browse by name (not typing www.xxxin address bar) stopped working. For example, if I typed in dell, instead of going to Dell.com, the computer went into a search mode and pulls up a google search page. Thinking there was a bug, I uninstalled, then re-installed. It works fine for a while. But if I close my session, and sign back on, we are back to not working properly. As I use Firefox at home, I am used to this feature, and it is driving me crazy. All help appreciated.

Is "Address Bar Browse By Name" selected in the Google Tool Bar Options? Click on the Google button > Options.

Hope this helps.

Some other things to check

Are Google and Java ad-ons enabled? while online go to
Tools > Internet Options > programs > left click on the
Manage Add-ons button. In the drop down menu select "Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer".

It may take a few seconds for the list to populate.

Then scroll though the list and select the first Google related item by left clicking on it. Select the Disable radio button at the bottom and click OK. Then re-enable the Item. If the Update ActiveX button is not greyed-out then left click Update ActiveX and follow the prompts to download and install. Do this for each Google and Java related item in the list.

Click OK, OK. Restart the computer.

If this doesn't fix the problem the only other thing I can think of is to uninstall and re-install the program.

Hope this helps.
