It's unlikely that Apple forced anything as updates/changes have to be installed.
Reboot the iMac and see if the icon returns.
If it doesn't, download it again

I joined Google Photos for unlimited photo storage on all of my Mac devices, iMac computer, iPhone and iPod Touch. It works flawlessly. When I downloaded the app for my iMac, there was the Google Photo symbol in my title bar at the top of my screen, and I could open it from there any time I wanted. Yesterday I noticed the symbol was gone, and I needed to go to Google Photos on-line to access my photos. I did not change anything. Did Apple force the change? Did this happen to anyone else?
