Google Earth freezing on startup

Jun 17, 2010 1:53PM PDT

I'm looking for help on overcoming freezing of Google Earth after it starts up. Some online suggestions say to clear the cache. I'm running win vista on my Acer netbook AO751h, have a 2GB processor, 250GB hd.

I'm beginning to think the processor is not up to the job? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm a newbie and need a step by step breakdown. Thanks!

It's not a 2 GB processor, but may be you mean 2 GB of memory. The specs I see for the processor on this Acer is a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270-N280 and while I don't know much about it, I would say it should be up to the job, if a little slow.

Is there any firewall installed and working on this system? If so, I wonder if the firewall is preventing Google Earth from connecting to the internet. That may be causing the freeze.

If that's not it, tell us about your internet connection. Is it broadband speed? Google Earth is fairly heavy on internet bandwidth when it starts up.

Other than that, any other issues with this system, eg virus or other malware infections?

Has Google Earth ever worked on this computer? If so, what has changed since it last worked?

Failing all that, try uninstalling Google Earth, rebooting the computer, then re-installing.

Clearing the cache isn't harmful and not the most difficult thing to do. So did you try? And did it help?

Nah.

I see this has an Intel GMA 500 so my bet is that this machine is not up to the task. You can give it a try to use Intel's latest video driver but this is a Netbook.

As someone put it nicely -> "Know your limitations."

You didn't get a laptop but something that will work most of the time for most things.
