Good laptop for less than $800?

I'm shopping for a laptop for the first time - have usually had desktops, and need help choosing one that will be reliable and do what I need.

What I'll be using it for:

- Web surfing 80-90% of the time (I run an online e-commerce store from home so work on the internet, checking stats, emailing people, doing research, etc)

- Uploading/downloading files via FTP. Also using Dreamweaver or Frontpage to edit websites

- Probably listening to music while I work

- Microsoft Word/Excel/Powerpoint, etc.

- Little to no gaming capabilities are needed. I have a desktop that is fast so if I ever feel the urge to play video games I'll just use that.

#1 priority is fast internet browsing/multitasking between various websites since it'll be used for working on the internet most of the time. Pages need to load fast.

Lastly, need a 15" screen or larger, I have a hard time working with smaller screens.

I would like to pay less than $800.

The two notebooks I am looking at right now are:

-- HP Pavilion DV6810US
http://www.amazon.com/Pavilion-DV6810US-Laptop-Processor-Premium/dp/B0015HTXUA/ref=dp_cp_ob_title_1#productPromotions

-- Dell Inspiron (don't know what model yet, don't know the difference between models)

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Frankly? Keep shopping.

I've found Core 2 Duo in that range even at Staples and more places. I've had more than my share of spotty reboots with that CPU.

Well, whaddya know! I just looked on staples.com and it is cheaper there than on Amazon. I always figured big stores like that had the worst prices. (because in the past, I can always find the same stuff on Amazon for way less than local stores)

The units with said other CPU. The issue is spotty, not limited to this or that model but a common theme is that other CPU. For now I'm going to avoid that one. Your choice.

Stay with INTEL processor, there are lots of pretty good systems out there in that price range. Toshiba, Lenovo, Sony and some of the Gateways. Also the ACER is another good choice I saw one for about 700 bucks and it was running a GOOD Intel processor 250gb HDD, webcam card reader very good looking rig I thought it was very impressive for the price.

Lots of laptops under $800

After doing more research today (and thanks to your replies about there being plenty in that price range) it looks like I do have a lot of options under $800.

The question now is...what brand? Seems like every brand has both raving fans and people who hate it.

Yes there are a lot of good ones, I bought a new Toshiba a few months ago 17" T5750 intel, 3gb 250gb HDD lots of bells and whistles cost just a bit over 800 surprisingly light for the size, very cool running, gorgeous screen graphics. It is my second Toshi, the first was an early dual core intel 15" and I really liked that one, so I highly recommend.

Go with dell

HP has horrible support, cause they don't care about you, they care about business'. Go with dell if money is an issue go to the dell outlet. Great pc's for A LOT less.
