Good drivers can handle distractions

Nov 26, 2005 8:42AM PST

All the baloney about cell phones being dangerous is misguided. People have been irritated by obnoxious people with cell phones often enough that they love to take a swipe at them whenever they can. Having a conversation on a cell phone is no more dangerous than having a conversation with a person that is in the car, maybe less if it is a driver that wants to look you in the face when talking to you. The one dangerous thing about cell phones is dialing on the tiny key pads while driving. The cell phone industry really needs to improve the technology on voice dialing including being able to say the telephone number when it is not a number in memory. I have had a couple of phones that were suppose to be able to do this, but they worked so poorly, I gave up trying to use the feature. That is why I still have my old full size analog phone mounted in my truck, I can dial it without taking my eyes off the road.
So be honest folks, cell phone usage is no more dangerous than any of the other distractions. A good driver knows when the phone can be used safely and how to handle this and other distractions. A bad driver's lack of skills is amplified by any distraction and it is the horrible results from the bad guys that colors peoples thinking.
