Good Computer Speakers?

Apr 9, 2007 12:35AM PDT

I need a new pair? Any good suggestions on a set less than $100 (I'm not looking for amazing sound quality just something with a lot of bang for its buck.) Should I get a 2.1 system or a 5.1 system?

the creative inspire series is an awesome 5.1 set up which has plenty of bang for the buck. i would say that the most important thing for good quality sound is a good sound card. i have the creative sound blaster x-fi xtreme gamer ($100) and i really cant explain in words how awesome it sounds. if you combine a good sound card with a 5.1 surround set up (i.e. Creative Inspire T6100,$80), you should be good to go. hope this helps.

good brands:

Logitech makes good speakers that tend to be good values...something you wouldn't expect from a keyboard company. They regularly win awards, and I own a set of 5.1 Z640's that I bought refurbished 3 years ago for $35, and they still sound great.

Creative also has a great reputation, and they specialize in PC audio without being overly expensive, but i have no personal experience with their speakers.

as far as 2.1 vs 5.1, its completely up to you. If you use them mostly for music and general stuff, you might not get as much out of 5.1 as if you use them for gaming or movie-watching. they'll be nice in anycase, because you'll be surrounded by audio rather than in front of it, but almost no recorded music has more than 2 channels.

look at the altec lansing 2.1 speakers in "my products" in my profile. They are amazingly loud and powerful with great sound and only $40 at compusa.
