General discussion

Good Close up / Marco Digital Camera

Feb 7, 2010 8:11AM PST

I do a lot of auctions on ebay and I'm looking for a good but not too expensive camera to take close up shots.

Any suggestions would be appreciated,

Thanks

Most digital cameras do a good enough job for your purpose.

The key thing on close-ups/macros is good lighting and a tripod for your camera.

The Fujifilm S1500 is a good choice for a camera.

Thanks snapshot2 I already use portable photo studio with lights and a tripod but the pictures I take with my Canon PowerShot SX120IS at a distance of 2 inches still do not come out crystal clear. Do you have a S1500 now and have you taken close up pictures with it?

Thanks

I don't have a S1500.
I recommended it because it has the necessary manual controls and is relatively inexpensive.

Your SX120IS should do as well.
If the object you are photographing is 3 dimensional you have to be concerned about "depth of field".

You should use Aperture Priority Mode.
Set the aperture to the darkest setting (probably about f/8.0 on that camera.
Set the ISO at its lowest setting (usually ISO 100).
You do need a tripod because you will be shooting at a very slow shutter speed.
Set the focus to "center" or "spot"
You don't want to focus on an object, you want to focus on a spot on the object.
If you have a viewfinder on the camera, you may find it easier to see the spot you want to focus on.

Here are two pictures that show how aperture setting affects depth of field.
I was focused on the center of the letter O in the word "Corn"

snapshot2 thank you so much for the info and I will put these ideas into practice the next group of pictures I take.
