AFTER BEING SURE to have *completely* removed all traces of previous
programs I no longer wanted, opt for Avira Personal A/V as main real time guard/AV. Light on resources and pretty effective.
With the free version each update brings a pop up to upgrade to paid but other than that pretty good. Officially works XP SP2 & above but works fine on my old XP SP1 as well. Updates daily Mon-Fri inclusive.
New program versions auto install over old version via updater.
MBAM & SAS make good free on demand scanners for malware/spyware.
I still have a soft spot for Spybot & it does sometimes get stuff others missed. Enjoy!!

Expect some slow-down with an older PC with a good scanner, just want it to stay functional for awhile longer. Thanks for any info.
Antivirus scan history:
Norton, Edition 2003 [2004/5 were too bloated and were uninstalled]
Avast! Free program [removed when PC started acting up after one update; unable to access some of my own files till I removed it]
McAfee 2008 [OK but slowed things down considerably as I recall]
BitDefender 2009 and currently [which is now starting to act strange one month prior to subscription ending]
Pest scan history:
Spybot [never found anything]
Ad-Aware SE [would work, then freeze up and need to be un/reinstalled]
Spysweeper [worked great till around 6.1, then slowed PC down tremendously]
Currently use Windows Defender Free [don't keep it running on real time but scan weekly]
