Did it always do this?

If not, I suspect malware or something new like some USB drive or mouse.

As the makers move things around I can't be specific.

Since you are new to PCs why not make this a warranty issue? They fix it or you get a refund? Why should they expect everyone to be a computer scientist?

don't use the shutdown button, but hit the reset button instead. Reason is, starting with windows 8 it always "shutsdown" to a hiberfile. That's right, not a complete shutdown but hibernation. Sometimes that gets locked into a loop and the only way to stop it is to do a complete shutdown which might be done from a button, or pulling the battery for a few minutes. In windows 8, the reset is now the complete shutdown.

Here's some google links to find out all about it.

Yes.

If some app crashes on sleep/shutdown there's still a chance (98%?) it will reboot. I'd turn that off as well while troubleshooting.

I'm guessing the machine didn't do this when new. Today's malware is causing no end of trouble and just last week another client told me "I have Norton." Since they knew me I replied with "I'm sorry to hear that." Next we began scans with Grif's help at http://forums.cnet.com/7726-6122_102-5509131.html?tag=posts;msg5509131

If there is any update to drivers or malware present it can get deep. http://www.eightforums.com/bsod-crashes-debugging/23170-windows-8-crash-restart-after-sleep-upon-reboot.html for example.

-> Don't update drivers from Microsoft unless it's a Microsoft PC.

Here's the reboot on crash setting: http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/19/SLN288916/EN#How_to_disable_Automatic_Restart

All it takes is one thing.

At the office we follow some simple rules, Grif's advice on scans and above all, no drivers from Microsoft.

restore
Dec 5, 2014 8:03AM PST

Does this happens the first time you bought the device? Have you tried to reformat or system restore it? I think those are the only solution if you've already done everything, otherwise take it to the service center and have it fixed. Good luck!
