Go wireless for a newbie

May 10, 2005 9:36PM PDT

Hi, I have a DSL internet connection at home which uses PPPoe for access. I have a Centrino notebook which supports both G and B versions of 802.11 protocol. I would now like to connect to the internet connection wirelessly throughout my home. Will buying a good wireless router solve the problem or should I just buy an access point. I may add 1 or 2 more computers at home later on. Please help.

An access point is what you add to your router.

In your case, a WIFI Router combo you see all over will do.

If you want to research more before...

Look at the www.linksys.com or www.dlink.com sites. Configuratiuon tools and more to fill our heads are there, but...

If your DSL modem has the ethernet port then your common wifi/router that you see all over is the solution.

-> What they won't tell you, but I will is that "NEW" and right out of the box, most routers need the firmware updated. I wish that wasn't true, but 9 out of 10 times (for the last 10 times) I had to update the firmware before the unit worked.

Hi,
Got a Linksys router and created my wireless network. What a feeling! It feels great not to be tied up to a table and Chair. Thanks Bob for your inputs sure helped me in taking that final plunge!!
