Gmail problems with its new window

Dec 7, 2011 2:49PM PST

Hello, my OS is Windows XP, Internet Explorer8, Mail is Gmail. Yesterday Google has upgraded Gmail to dislplay a new window. That has introduced mayor problems. 1. Inbox: rolling up and down the list of income mails with the ruler (on the side of the window) does not work smoothly anymore but jumps forward a few lines after some 20 seconds. Smooth rolling resumes when I switch to 'Reply' or 'Forward' the mail message. 2. Out of some 2000 mails in the Inbox (30% of total space used) only some 150 mails can be displayed. I have upgraded IE8 to its present version, but that does not help. Could someone advise me what happens. Thanks in advance.

I'd ask that of Google but

those 2000 emails may offer a clue. To my knowledge, these are not stored locally so must be retrieved each time so there would not be there instantaneously. You might try the gmail option to temporarily revert to the old display and see if that helps, however.

I'd agree

I'd agree with the other comment, and the fact that you're running XP probably means you have an older system, whereas Google is clearly moving the baseline up on what they are assuming as an average PC.

You might also find that switching to another browser, with a better JavaScript engine, would provide some degree of relief. Firefox 8 or Chrome 15 for example. It would certainly help with the security aspect which has plagued Internet Explorer since about version 3, and Microsoft shows no real signs of doing anything about.

Thank you both, Steven and Jimmy. Meanwhile I have contacted the Gmail forum too and actually got complete answers from there. I copy them here for your and everyone's knowledge.

1. There have been reports that compatibility view can make IE8 look like IE7 (which is no longer supported). Try disabling the compatibility mode: http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=181472 (for some people adding google.com and then disabling it works).

2. Probably the full range of mails has been archived and can be retrieved on clicking 'All Mail'.
