General discussion

Gmail , mail friction

Sep 11, 2007 3:12AM PDT

Hello all,

I have a gmail account which i had set up as POP account in Mac Mail on my laptop.
It was working fine-receiving and sending emails.

Recently, I got a new email id from the school. I tried setting it up as IMAP account in order to receive it in the same laptop's Mac Mail, where I have gmail as the POP account.

Once the IMAP was added gmail (POP) could not send any email out

So, I deleted only the IMAP (school ID) account, but still I am unable to send out mails from Gmail (POP) account.

I have checked and rechecked all the settings according to Gmail and Mac mail. Now even in the absence of IMAP the gmail -POP is unable to send emails out.

where am I going wrong??

thanks for reading

Servers

sometimes the server that is selected for outgoing mail is not the correct one, especially if you have more than one account on that machine. The servers stay in the list even after the accounts that used them are deleted

Delete all servers with the exception of the one used by Gmail and try again.

Anything else that i am missing?

Sends Gmail but does not receive it?

is that where we are?

If yes, there is a "possibility" that there is something in your Gmail box that is not letting go.

In mail, once you have the account set up again, go to Window > Connection Doctor and see if Mail has established a two way connection with the server.

Ok I think I have confused you.

I am able to receive new emails but am unable to send any emails with Mail.

One more thing..when I connect at home (wireless) then Mail can receive and send emails i.e. the POP account works fine.

Only at school i face this problem of not able to send emails.

any suggestions

If this problem only

happens at school and Mail functions correctly at home, then I would speak with the school IT department to find out what they are blocking.

While I am fairly sure that the method of connection is not the issue, I would try connecting, at home, exactly the same way as you do at school. That would rule out the wired/wireless issue.

You might find that the school has a block on any email protocols other than their own system. You have not mentioned whether you could actually receive mail, at the school, before you created the IMAP account.
