General discussion

gmail...?

Jun 12, 2007 3:18AM PDT

hello, I'm a new gmail user, and I love it so far, but I can't figure out how to create folders to save and sort my emails, like I do in hotmail and comast, I know it must be possible, but I just don't know how to, thanks.

GMail doesn't have folders, only labels...

You don't

The idea behind Gmail is "search, don't sort". Takes a little getting used to, but it works better IMO. You want to find some message, you just enter in something to the search box along the top, and you'll get a listing of messages that meet that search criteria. It's a lot faster than trying to categorize everything into folders... It just takes some time to get used to, as I said.

good to know....well actually not so good, I understand what their idea is, but I would rather be able to clasify them like: important, phone numbers, or stuff like that as I wont remember their subjects to search them....

could I search them by label? if so that would be even better than having folders, how do I label them?

thanks again, Marcelo.

Simple

Hit the edit labels link in the green box to the left, make some labels for stuff. Next select some messages you want to have that label, and there's an apply label option in the drop down box at the top. The instructions are a bit basic, but it shouldn't be too hard to figure out.

Nothing

It's just hidden from view, unless you select the "All Mail" link. Even if you hit delete, it tends to stick around unless you go into the trash and manually delete it from there.

Part of how Google funds this little venture, and can give going on 3GB of space to everyone, is they use email messages to kind of seed their text ads. Generating a massive list of key words that are repeated often. So they don't want people deleting email, and try to passively encourage you not to.

Folders in gmail

On the left hand side of the gmail page there are many options. Explore them and choose what you want. I save many of my emails in folders that I have named.
