GIMP

Mar 7, 2006 8:47AM PST

Hey, I want to use GIMP as my image editing software, but when I download Gimp.app and try to install it, it says I need X11. I go to Apple.com and download X11 but when i try to install it says that there is asomething newer already installed. But I still can't use GIMP. Can anyone help me out? I running a one year old iMac G5 with Mac OS X 10.4.5. I know someone here was using GIMP for the photoshop contest, does anyone know how to get it to work? Thanks.

Not sure about MAC

But as far as I know on windows and linux, GIMP requires GTK to be installed. Is it possible that you don't have that? I know the windows GIMP port has an installer that includes GTK installer automatically, and linux apt-get or any package manager has those dependencies already defined, so maybe MAC has the same thing?
I'd do a little digging for ya, but my dinner is ready for pickup Happy

A quick check

I have never tried installing GIMP on an OSX machine, but here are my ideas:
Have you looked to make sure X11 isn't already installed? If so, I think you will need to run it before you try GIMP.

It would either be in
/Applications/
or
/Applications/Utilities/
I don't remember which.

If you find it and it doesn't want to play nicely (work), you might try trashing it and using the download from Apple.

Another source for X11 should be the disc(s) that came with your iMac. Somewhere (again, can't remember), you should be able to find the install package for X11, among other things.

Google is Your Friend (sometimes)

A quick search of Google provided me with:

http://www.macgimp.org/ <-- loaded with stuff.
http://gimp.org/macintosh/ <-- and then some.

I'm using Portable GIMP on a USB drive on XP and find it a fairly decent photo editor alternative to Photoshop. I like Photoshop Elements on Mac for $80, too, though.
