Gildan Apparel

has plants in Mt. Airy, NC and Hillsville, VA (Cindy lives in Mt. Airy and I'm close to Hillsville)

They make t-shirts as well as other types of sports clothing and socks that are sold at sports events, music concerts, etc.

They are closing up shop and moving the manufacturing plants to Hondorus/Ecuador because of cheaper labor by the end of January.

Just letting you know to look for that Gildan Apparel label should you be in the market to buy any t-shirts at concerts, etc. and possibly get you to change your mind and not buy them.

We've already lost furniture mfr plants such as Vaughan (as in Vaughan-Bassett) and Webb from this area in addition to many jeans processing plants and other apparel industry types due to overseas competition to the point that we have NO industry left here in our community as well as other small communities that depended on the 'made in America' pride.

Everybody is looking for cheap labor. It would be great to have more socially responsible business leaders. I came across a great contest for non-profit business professionals at www.svn.org/imaginewhatsnext. They are holding a contest to reward business leaders for starting or running socially responsible companies. This seems to be a growing trend!

Interesting... I wasn't aware Gildan moved last year.

I usually get American Apparel t-shirts when I do screen print jobs for myself and friends. It's a high quality product and guaranteed to be made in the US along with the employees getting paid a livable wage for their work.

....and it will do nothing but continue to grow. As long as there are hungry people elsewhere they will always be willing to work cheaper than the ones here that have groceries. For many companies like Gildan they find that they have to make these moves to compete with the competition that has already made the move.
