gift for mom

I am looking for a point and shoot or compact for my mom. She is not great with all of the options that many cameras have so she needs one that she can turn on and shoot with minimal complication. Her main subject will be my daughter whether outside playing or at some extra curricular activity such as dance, gymnastics or cheerleading. I would like to stay in the $100-$300 range if possible. She will need a nice size screen so that she can see what she is capturing and maybe a decent zoom in case she may need to zoom across the ball field. She previously had a Nikon Cool Pix 7600 i think so maybe we could similar quality. Also there will be many of these photos that will possibly be made into poster size or something similar. Thanks in advance for any help.

Sounds like she's looking at a superzoom. These are the top superzooms out right now.

Panasonic FZ18
Canon S5IS
Sony H50
Fuji S8100fd

Have her find out which one she's most comfortable with. There are some compact superzooms, but the larger ones perform better.

Maybe a superzoom, but maybe a mid line zoom.

I too thought super-zoom. I have a Panasonic FZ18 and you cannot beat the quality for the money. The IA (intelligent auto) works extremely well. However, if she wanted something she could throw in her purse that has a good zoom I would look at the Panasonic Lumix TZ4s or the Sony h10. If you think she cares more about size than zoom, the Canon SD1100 is a great choice.

Hope this helps.
