Gif files to jpg (or is it jpeg)files? Is it possible?...

Nov 20, 2005 4:56PM PST

I have a number of gif files on my win98SE from IE6.
Although I don't wish to do this yet I would like to know how to convert them.I am unsure whether it is jpg or jpeg files that are fine for me.

I notice they are easy to open ...quite often when opening gif files I would just get a blank screen with a little red x in the top left...which does not click.

I have Microsoft word....although I hope I am not jumping the gun to learn too much....I am about to alter my os...and learning a lot about that at the moment.Hopefully my 'mentors' don't tell me off. LOL Happy
(Hello R + T )

I cannot even remember where some are from, I do remember right clicking and save as and some don't allow me to save any other way...sometimes I may not have tried to save another way either.

When I try to rename it tells me that may make it unusable/unstable.

I just wish to save to CD disk and use them later...by printing them out.

Thanks for your help in advance...
Mandy

Graphics program?
Nov 20, 2005 7:22PM PST

Open them in whatever image editing program you have, save as jpg. You can't do this in a browser.

If there's a red x it usually means that the file is not named the same as the HTML tag.

Where are the files? On the internet? Be aware that there might be copyright issues.

Irfan view

Irfan view is a free download on cnet downloads that will work great on your old win98 machine. Its fast and powerful and should allow you to view what you have saved. It should also let you do individual picture or batch conversions to other formats (if I remember correctly it should have this function).

good luck

downloaded and working Irfan View!!

Simple to use and notice other uses for this program that interest me....particularly slide shows!

I have wanted to do slide shows eventually...you have no idea how many photos are in our house and I have had ideas of doing this for the kids!

Thanks again

I am aware of copyright issues......
Nov 22, 2005 10:01PM PST

What I do is download images that help me with my craftwork....

I can base my pictures that I paint on images...unable to paint without something in front of me to help give me a base to start with....it's not copied as is.

I just like painting things around the house and to give as gifts...at the moment I am working on xmas gifts...prefer to make than buy things as Xmas is commercialised too much....

I think it's the thought and time in a present and the fact it's personal.

One question...what do you mean "If there's a red x it usually means that the file is not named the same as the HTML tag."?

If you see a red x where an image should be..
Nov 23, 2005 6:13AM PST

in Internet Explorer it usually means that the file is named one way, eg: filename.jpg but it's referred to in the page's HTML code in an a different way ,eg: file_name.jpg. ANY difference in spelling, case, etc, means it can't be found by the browser so you get the red x. Names must be EXACTLY the same.

To see the HTML go to View>Source in your browser.

Other reasons

If the filepath is not correct, for rexample if the HTML specifies the graphic is in one directory but it's actually in a different directory, OR it hasn't been uploaded at all.

Ed...hmmm...checked view/source...and
Nov 23, 2005 4:34PM PST

find there is nothing in there at all!

I did recently - a handful of weeks ago lose video and sound drivers and downloaded video drivers + and sound drivers (although these have given me grief...long story-nothing to do with this).

Video came up o.k....maybe I missed something?

Or does it not matter if nothing is in the notepad?

It is annoying sometimes when wanting to see an image and sometimes whole sites images are missing!

Not the page the graphic is supposed to be on...

Any referring page where the graphic should appear will have the code. If there isn't one you are outta luck.

Use batch converter
Dec 15, 2005 5:24PM PST

Use batch converter like Pic2Pic.
You add files to the list,
set output format as JPG and get your images converted.
While converting you can resize, set brightness,
contrast, place watermark on images and more...

Why are you pushing Pic2Pic so hard?

All 6 of your first 6 messages on these formums have been pushing Pic2Pic.

Why?

Batch Conversions

In Adobe Photoshop it is called actions. No need for additional programs.
Just a part of the amazing Photoshop.
Will work in Mac and PC.
