Giant Catfish May Be World's Largest Freshwater Fish

May 11, 2006 1:46AM PDT

Fishers in northern Thailand netted this huge catfish in the Mekong River on May 1. Nearly nine feet long (2.7 meters) and as big as a grizzly bear, the behemoth tipped the scales at 646 pounds (293 kilograms). Experts say the fish, which belongs to the species known as the Mekong giant catfish, may be the largest freshwater fish ever recorded.

With 73 million people using that Mekong River for a toilet no wonder the fish grew so big. I would'nt eat that fish. No way...Plain

the same sanitation system years ago in Bangkok, Thailand for the canals/rivers and they catch the fish.
When I first visited Japan and Korea in the 50's most of the vegetable crops used human fertilizer from 'honey buckets', which BTW makes crops grow real good. You could smell it in the air as soon as you departed the plane, even in cities, but after a couple days never smell it. The military specified different fertilizer when buying vegetables.

There are purported to have been Sturgeon at least nearly as big as this, but the largest one on record is a puny 468 pounds.

During a huge die-off of Sturgeon in the Fraser River in British Columbia about 20 years ago there was one monster quoted at 10 foot something in length but it was too far gone to weigh, just fell appart as they tried. I figure a National Geographic statistic is good enough for me.
