I've spent several hours of frustration with this and then suddenly - boom - the "duds" disappeared! All but one, which allowed me to delete it normally. I would delete the original post above, but I can't find how that's done.
Sorry to waste your time, guys.
Hello all! I have a problems with "undeletable" icons that are on the desktop, but don't show up in the File Manager. I now have 7 of them and they are really irritating. Here is how they came to be.
I transferred last year to a new PC going from Win7 to Win10. On the old PC I had used BumpTop desktop for a number of years, but did not install it at first on the new PC. Yesterday I did, after having researched in the Net to confirm the compatibility between BT and Win10.
BumpTop installed and opened normally, but I found that nearly all my Shortcuts had duplicated. I started deleting the "extras" but found that, as I went, oddly, the icon I had selected didn't always delete, instead its twin disappeared (are you following me still?)
Several of those left (7 to be exact) turned out to be "duds" , saying Win couldn't find the files. I tried to check the file Properties, but nothing comes up when I right click, and these shortcuts are NOT visible in my file manager.
In the meantime, i have replaced them with valid Shortcuts, but I cannot delete the "duds". Downloaded File Assassin but found the icons did not interact with FA.
And, what I didn't mention, when I attempt to delete them directly from the desktop, I get that black window with
"Warning: some items cannot be deleted (i.e. My Computer, Recycle Bin). Please remove them through Windows Desktop Properties.
I found a mention somewhere of a "desktop cache" I could clean out, but have no idea where that is.
And there it is. Anyone have an inkling what the problem is?
