Getting Started Need Software Advice

Jan 9, 2008 8:37AM PST

I am a Architectural Draftsman with advanced knowledge of AutoCAD and Corel Photo software. I have in the past cobeled together a few web pages using various online building tools and programs like Power Point. As you can imagine these programs are very limited and the quality of the sites has suffered. My company has given me the opportunity to design our web site. I would like to do a good job. I need advice on software. We do not have alot of money to spend. First of the year is always a slow time for us. So here are my questons.

1. What do you think about buying an older version of front page on EBAY and using that?

2. Would you recommend any programs that I can get in the $50 or less price range? Any that are good?

3. Could you recommend any older versions of other software I could possibly get cheap?

Using a CMS (Content Management System) to design your website? That way you are not limited to a computer with the software installed, but can use any computer with an internet connection. Joomla for example has many extensions and free tutorials all over the internet. You could also pick a free, corporate theme and modify it to your liking. Once you get that setup, you have a powerful back-end to manage the website, allow other company members to update certain sections (post updates, etc), and are not limited to a budget, since there are many open-source plugins available. Just a thought.

To your question about buying an older software... it would be good to learn with, but you might find some outdated parts and in the end I believe you would be too limited, especially with the pace of todays technology.

The easiest and cheapest way to produce a presentable website is to get a free web design program (I used Trellian). Then browse around the web till you find a page design you like, download it and modify to your specs. You don't have to know one html command to do this.

Unless you speak fluent HTML, I wouldn't attempt starting from scratch. And the templates that come with low-end hosting plans are usually too simple looking and too hard to improve.
