Getting rid of squirrels.

Dec 4, 2013 1:13PM PST

When I first moved in here in 88', I planted 3 pecan trees. A Chataw a Navaho and a Desirable. The're all medium big trees now. About 30'. They're all grafted, meaning that they have native root systems and eatin' pecan tops. The nuts are huge. 6 or 8 from any of them is a meal. They're big and buttery and delicious

But I don't get any. The squirrels eat them ALL green. Right out of the husks. I'm in a subburban neighborhood so I can't shoot them. I'm a bit scared to put poison out because of the pets and the kids.

Every year I see these giant pecans forming, and then like over night there's a neat pile of husks and shells. I'm thinking squirrel teriyaki might be good with pecan sause.

I need help. What kind of traps do I get? When do I set them? How many do I need? Any recipies? The skinning and cleaning I think I can handle.

I'm serious here. Help me.

Limiting their travel makes sense. I was under 10 years of age when first seeing these and wasn't permitted to try them. I remember thinking they were fake. We were told early on by adults that these carnival games were all rigged and to stay away from them.

we used them for cherry bombs. Took two people, one to load and aim, the other to light it. Nothing funnier than someone hearing an explosion occur in the air above them, and if you wrapped them in some paper, they seem pieces of "something" come floating down. I thought once about doing it with paper around feathers, but never did, but would be funny if they thought a bird had exploded above them.

I've heard tell of shotgun type 22 shells.

Very small pellets. And then there's paper 22 loads. Those couldn't travel very far or do much damage.

I bought, about 10 Christmas' ago. a blow gun. There was a guy selling them out of his trunk in a parking lot. This thing is unbeleavable! The accuracy you would not believe! I'm just seeing the neighbor's faces watching half a dozen squirrles limping around with long wire projectiles with colored plastic beads on the end sticking out of them.

One of my old partners bought a 50 acre chunk of land many years back. Half the red ceder trees died within a year. The old owners had a suqirrel chasing dog who had stripped all the bark off up to about 6'.

I know you can do that

heard arguments depending on local authroity

that shooting a shotgun style shell in a pistol constitutes an illegally short shotgun, now usually charged as a weapon of mass destruction (sawed off shotgun use that is).

ridiculous perhaps, but we know how legal arguments can be.

one model is Tarus Judge

uses long 45 shell

uses 410 shotgun shells.

Or the S&W Governor .410/.45 Colt/.45 ACP

I read somewhere that you could get .410 shells with less shot large size than normal, aimed at those that like these .410 pistols for close range self defense. Does seem like it might be a good weapon for breakin type confrontation, range there is going to be feet not yards, and 4 or 5 balls instead of one increases the percentage of impacts. Of course, each impact is going to do less damage, so whatever floats your boat........

I think shooting is out of the question.

The houses around here are too close together. Not to mention the laws.

I planted my pecan trees back in '88 as an investment. The last time I got a single nut was the year before they became irreversibly close to the house. In fact, my first motivation was to shade the roof and driveway in the summer. My Mom's house was completely shaded by her oak trees. Not a speck of sun hit her roof from May until November. So I'm not quite there yet, but on the way. They're messy trees though, and quite a lot of trouble. And the birds!

Anyhow, I've been thinking about my plan to screw those ordinary, big wooden based spring loaded rat traps to the lower branches. The family across the street has three young children. We're close enough that I can watch their TV through my front window. I can't see myself climbing the ladder with a big knife between my teeth 3 or 4 times a day. You get the picture. Maybe in the back yard?

The year (many ago) that I got a 5 gal. bucket full of those big fat buttery pecans, it cut my food bill by some significant amount. Maybe not 10%, but close. Add to that a squirrel harvest and who knows. I'm not rich.

Just a question. Does any body know anything about the home life of squirrels? Do they pair off and huddle-up and sleep together? Or are they kind'a like loners? There ARE live traps, but aren't they pretty expencive? I wonder if Animal Control would let me borrow a few.

Squirells

Squirrels are very funny, small animals, but, despite their attractive appearance, they have gained the reputation of well-known pests long ago. They eat bird feed, damage the grown-up vegetables and your favorite flowers, turn everything upside down in the attic. The pair of amorous squirrels can transform into an entire army of rodents and occupy your home for a long time.
