Getting Rid of AOL for a Better Dial Up Provider

Dec 10, 2006 12:05PM PST

Hi.....My mother who is 82, has used AOL forever, buy is truly fed up with it, as most people are! The difficulty is that she lives part time in Florida (area code 954 431 XXXX), and the remainder of the year in New Jersey,(area code 609 655 XXXX), In New Jersey, she has a limited calling area. I would really like her to change providers, but I am at a loss. She has a limited income, and I am not looking to add to her expenses. She uses her computer for e-mail, and surfing the net for recipes. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

have numbers everywhere. Pick one that fits her budget.

Just a question: Do you have dial-up service? If so, there is a workaround and she could get service for free.

Excuse my lack of knowledge....but what do you mean when you refer to
there is a workaround and she could get service for free. I live 15oo miles away, and currently use a cable modem to connect. I thank you for pointing out that there are numbers for dial up....are you referring to people pc or net zero?
Thanks for the help
Gail

just want to make a suggestion, i heard that peoplepc is one of the highest ranked on customer satisfaction by J.D power and assosiciates why not try subscribing to peoplepc? and by the way the cost is very reasonable for a dial up service.

Use Netscape Dial Up
Apr 20, 2007 12:18AM PDT

I use Netscape and have not had any problems except after 3 hours if I am not at the computer, it will drop me due to inactivity. But I always get on right away and it seems to surf faster with Firefox ...

Get away from Internet Explorer.

If you do/have escaped AOL, be sure to let her bank know about it too, or AOL may continue to charge her account every month. Try to clean out everything in her PC that's AOL related, including links/bookmarks/favorites etc. Otherwise, everytime she innocently uses them, they may try to reactivate her account and start charging her again.
