Going to Start Run Msconfig and unchecking qttask is all that is nessary. This is preventing it from starting.
The icon is for convience should you desire to use it.
If you dont wish to "see it" drag n drop it to ___ desktop? select move here, create shortcut, delete. Will still be found in start-all programs-tree, as well as programs file. Deleteing a taskbar icon does not remove the program nor does it disable it from working. msconfig qttask stops quicktime from starting. msconfig is incapable of "removeing it" from the taskbar.
Simple tool to do all this for you is here->

But the icon will more than likely remain as is.
By the way if you press n hold ctrl & alt and tap delete under the PROCESS header you can see whats running, open quicktime on it adds taskmgr (the taskbar) and adds Quicktime player. Close QT player and both go away.
so....its not running right?
Have quicktime installed and it keeps showing up as a startup program on my taskbar. I go to msconfig and startup to uncheck it and then reboot, but it keeps coming back on the taskbar.
Am I neglecting something? Want to keep startup programs to a minimum as I play games a lot that tell me to disable many startup programs.
