Question

Getting Page Errors on Forum

Oct 1, 2011 12:27AM PDT

CNET is not loading into IE7 right. Started about 9/28/11. When I hover over the topics in the middle of the page it is suppose to pop up a list of sub-topics you can click on. It's not doing that anymore for me. And I can't log in at all. When I cursor over the log in link (on any of the pages) in the upper right it turns into a hand and underlines it, but when I click on it absolutely nothing happens - no log in box opens up. Nothing happens when I click on Create a New Discussion - Start Here. And it gives me a lot of page errors. Same with the join CNET link and most other links on the page. I can type in the search box but clicking on the search icon doesn't launch it.

I'm using Windows XP sp2 with IE7, but it doesn't work on my Windows 7 pc either. Could it be a router setting? Or my ESET NOD32 security?

HEY...I don't know what I did, I've been turning things off and on in various spots like trusted sites, etc. Now all of a sudden the icons for facebook and the other ones showed up (they were missing) and it let me log in. I don't know if it will keep. Anyone know what I did to disallow and then re-allow the forum to work right?

Clarification Request
And What's this about Facebook?
Oct 1, 2011 12:35AM PDT

I don't use facebook but now I'm constantly getting this security pop up that the current site is trying to open a trusted site. And it says the current site is Facebook and it's trying to open trusted site Forum.cnet. What have I done? Am I in facebook and not CNET? Get me out of this.

That sounds similar

I've just had a colleague who couldn't log in to CNET in IE. She had also been changing settings! Happy

She found that Firefox still worked.

But the one she found that fixed it, (for her at least), was IE's History. It had been changed to 'delete history on exit'. She changed that back and was able to log in again.

It's a strange one as I suspect deleting history also deleted CNET cookies, and yet cookies would not be set until a member logged in anyway. A sort of Catch 22 situation.

I have to ask. Why XP SP2? Where is XP3? With XP3 you can download and install the newer IE8.

About Facebook. You should also see Google and Yahoo there as well. CNET has formed partnerships with these social networking communities that allow those members to log straight in to CNET with their social networking logins.

They're safe and can be accepted as trustworthy. No, you are not logged into FB or the others when you log into CNET and no information is passed to them.

I hope that helps.

Just to be clear
Oct 2, 2011 1:31AM PDT

I didn't start changing boxes and setting until this happened trying to fix it. And I cleared all my cookies, history, etc. I don't see a delete history on exit box. But I must have got the right combination. I took CNET out of my trusted sites and back to internet sites and the FB security pop ups stopped. Seems to be working ok now. Hope I didn't change anything important for the future.

Oh while I was down I put in a help request. Apparently you have to use a different sign in for that area? Had to register for it. I tried using my regular one and asked for a user name email and also a password reminder email and it said they were sent but I didn't get them.

Glad it wasn't just me. I wonder if the site could have had something wrong for a couple days? I was having withdrawal. Has this black bar always been at the bottom with Recently Viewed Products, My Lists, etc.?

Yes it makes me wonder
Oct 2, 2011 5:49AM PDT

whether there was a problem or not. One member having difficulties might be down to that member and system, but two at the same time makes that more unlikely.

I'm surprised you had to register/log in for a help request. What CNET page is that? I would like to try myself.

That black bar. You can minimise it to the left hand side. There's an arrow far right, (next to your username). Click that and it will reduce. It's been there a few years now... Happy

This one

at the Help Center http://cnet.custhelp.com/
That was the only place I could get a log in screen to show up, but it didn't like my normal cnet log in. So I made a new one. If you know that dept. tell them I'm the same person and it's working now. Here I'm volvogirl and at help center I'm volvogirl2.

And I tried it
Oct 2, 2011 8:00AM PDT

on my Window 7 pc and it did the same thing but it's working there now too but I didn't try anything to fix it there. That's why I thought it might be my router. I have Comcast, maybe it was them? So actually that's 3 computers so far reported.

Now that's very strange, and interesting
Oct 2, 2011 8:47PM PDT

Yep I had to log in for that CNET Help page and it wouldn't accept my normal CNET login details, the one I use for every other CNET sites.

Obviously I changed details to some generic ones.

I've asked Lee (Koo) if this is intentional, or some omission in the software.

The customer service log in and CNET log in are separate...
Oct 3, 2011 5:28AM PDT

systems. So your CNET log in will not work for the CNET customer service log in.

The customer service team told me that they will eventually be merged into one single log in, but for now they are separate. We apologize for the confusion. Believe me I was confused for a long time too.

Thanks!
