5.1 on laptop

Is this Sony capable of 5.1 playback?

if it is go Start/Conrol Panel/Sounds and audio devices
on the first tab click advanced and change the speaker setup to 5.1

if not then you will need to buy a laptop audio card that is capable of 5.1 playback

You will need 3 outbound connectors
Front
Surrounds
Subwoofer/Center

analog pro-logic versus dolby digital/dts

FYI... if you are feeding a pro-logic signal to your back speakers you will get very little sound out of the rear as they are meant to fill in... not dominate the surround stage built by the sound engineers. With a regular audio receiver you can adjust the rear speaker volume to compensate somewhat but it will still be at the mercy of the original soundtrack you feed your system. Of course if your original signal source is recorded in 5.1 then the culprit may be your equipment.

If your equipment can convert pro-logic to 5.1 through special processing via pro-logic II or something similar then you may need to turn the processing on.

Digital audio surround has dedicated channels recorded specifically for each rear channel but again the rear speakers are meant to enhance and fill in so it wont have the same impact as the front. Go out and purchase a home theater set up disc (you can buy a cheap one from DiscWasher for around $10.00). This will have test signals that you can run to see if it is your equipment or just the wrong settings.

the rear speakers are not meant to carry huge sound amounts. Only on dobly 5.1 and DTS broadcasts will you get a good bit of sound out of the rear speakers but it will still not be overpowering.
