Getting flooded with ads

Mar 9, 2004 2:44PM PST

I've gotten a complete deluge of pop ads and browsers redirections lately, and I know there are quite a few things floating around in my system like this istsvc.exe and that annoying Lycos sidebar that doesn't seem to go away.

I tried using Trend Micro's housecall and AdAware to get rid of any junk, but every time I turn on the computer all the data miners and malwares, etc seem to repopulate themselves. Some things AdAware was having trouble deleting so I even tried running it in safe mode, but that also didn't work very well.

Any suggestions? Maybe one of them Symantec programs would be more potent? Thanks!

You ran an updated ad-aware?? How about SpybotS&D ??

You can download it here:

http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=spybotsd
Before you run it - UPDATE it via build-in updater !

If you still didn't get rid of everything -

Download and run HijackThis - get it here:

http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/

Unzip, double-click "HijackThis.exe" and Press "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Click: "Save Log" (generates: "hijackthis.log")

Next, HijackThis | Config [button] | Misc Tools [button]
Click: Generate StartupList log [button] (generates: "startuplist.txt")

Next, go to the link below.

http://www.spywareinfo.com/forums/

and post your "hijackthis.log". There are the experts and they will tell you what to do.

Good Luck!

I found this info:

ISTsvc is an Adult Search Engine with a toolbar that attaches to IE. You can go to Intergrated Search Technologies website and they have a removal service that will remove ISTsvc programming (it appears to anyway)..
Try
http://www.xxxtoolbar.com/remove.html
to get rid of this ISTsvc problem

http://www.computing.net/security/wwwboard/forum/8895.html

I just click on the link http://www.xxxtoolbar.com/remove.html (though I don't have ISTsvc.exe). I just want to see what's in that page and this is what I got:

The title of the page is: Thanks for using XxX Toolbar

Message I got is:

Integrated Search Technologies Search Browser Plug-In Uninstalled.

The Integrated Search Technologies search browser plug-in has been uninstalled successfully. It may still be visible in browser windows that are currently open, but it will not be part of browser windows you open from now on.
