What is "google not working"? Is that some google app or just the web page?

There are long discussions about malware and such but given only what's in your post, you see the need for more detail.

There are also long discussions about Explorer's issue with video files which stretches all the way back to 1995 so I wonder if it's the same old thing.

Let's go with what you wrote so far. It works then it stops working. This sounds like your internet connection is failing. Since we don't see any detail about that, you need to call your provider everytime it happens.

IE9 is fine for some but I don't use it. Try Chrome, Firefox or another browser.

Media Player is limited in what it plays. I see that folk new to the PC might think this means there is something wrong with the PC. I won't go into detail about this but note that when a video does not play I always try VLC PLAYER.
