Getting error when installing windows 2000 pro on new drive

Jul 19, 2007 12:01PM PDT

My hard drive recently crashed on my sons computer so I bought a new Maxtor 320 Gb drive. I formatted the drive using a different computer with windows XP home on it. I removed the drive and installed it on the computer I bought it for, set the jumper for master. I inserted the windows 2000 pro disk in and start the install. Windows copies file in preparation for the install, then, said press "enter" to start the install and at this point I get a error message

"If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this appears again, follow these steps.

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows 2000 updates you might need.

If the problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory opions such as cashing and shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable componets, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options and then select safe mode.

Refer to your getting started manual for more information on troubleshooting stop errors."

Can anyone can tell if there is something else I need to do to complete the install of windows 2000 pro. I believe the windows 2000 is an older one and might have SP1 on it, I know SP2 in not on this windows disk.

Can windows 2000 pro recognize a hard drive with 320 gb on it or is it to big?

Whoops! 2000 can't deal with a preformatted drive.

It has this 127GB limit burnt in to it's bits. Yes you can go past that but http://www.48bitlba.com usually finds owners screaming that it's too hard.

Next time, don't pre-format. Let the OS you want to run do that.

Sorry if I was unclear.

If you just boot the 2000 CD and do your partitioning the "native" way you'll not have the issue.
