Getting confused--emachine M6809 or Compaq customized or ???

by mrsdriver5 / July 9, 2004 2:35 AM PDT

I'm looking at notebooks, but the more I read the more confused I get. I was ready to customize a Compaq R3000Z: Athlon64 3400+ 2.20GHz
15.4" WVA WSXGA+ display
1.0GB DDR SDRAM (2x512MB)
XP Pro
60GB 4200RPM
4X DVD+RW/R & CD-RW Combo Drive
64MB NVIDIA GeForce4 440 Go +1394
5-in-1 memory card reader
Built in Bay w/USB Digital Drive &64MB
Modem/PC Card 54g, Integrated Broadcom
802.11b/g Wireless LAN
Extra 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
I can get this configuration for around $1800--prices fluctuate, so I'd check out sites right before ordering, but the emachine M6809 looks good too and has good rebate offers from BB. It still shows as available at BB, but I know that won't last.

I already didn't know which machine to choose and now I don't know if I should wait for the mobile 3400 to come out??? (at least I think I read that's what is supposed to be coming).

I don't care about the weight or size since the main traveling I do is by car, so it doesn't have to fit under a seat or anything. I mainly would use it to download all the pix I take so I don't have to keep buying memory sticks and SD cards.

I'm not into gaming, so I don't care about the video card. Once in a while I play Risk or Scrabble and that's about it. I'm too busy editing pix--usually with two or three graphics programs open at once, so mainly need a computer that can keep up on the graphics. Other than digital editing (and I do want to edit some of our digital videos), I just need basic Quicken and Works--which does everything I need.

I'm really in no hurry except I want to quit wasting time trying to figure out what to buy, or IF to buy. I have two perfectly good Presario desktops, so I don't need a computer this minute. However, it's been almost three years since I bought my last computer and I seem to have this I-want-a-new-toy bug that I catch every few years!

Thanks for any suggestions~

If my laptop died today, the 6809 would replace it. But since mine is still working, I bide my time.

It's getting better (the choices) every month.

Re: Getting confused--emachine M6809 or Compaq customized or

Thanks~I just didn't know much about eMachines and was kind of leery. Would either of my choices do the heavy graphics work that I use the computer for? Am I better off looking at Centrinos or something else? Most of the comparison tests that I find are for gaming, which I don't really care about. Of course everyone says theirs is the best! I guess my question now is, would the M6809 be your choice just between my two selections or of all computers in that price range? Should I be looking at something completely different to do multiple tasking and fast graphics?

I have been dealing with the same delima, and have done A LOT of research. pretty much you get what you pay for. Everyone I have talked to in person did not trust the E Machine. (the people did not even sell notebooks, they were just giving their own advice) I am going to buy the CompaqX1000. I've heard almost nothing but good things about it and it even has its own forum sit (over 10,000 members) The site will tell you all that you need to know. Happy hope that helped!

The only negative that 6809 has to overcome is it's lable. Emachines for desktops are well known for proprietary things you can't upgrade. Laptops of all makes have that issue, so we can toss out that.

The Gateway connection helps me decide since it gets the Gateway service centers integrated which is my big concern.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
