But yes you do! http://www.avvanta.com/QDSLSupportFAQGT701Wireless
There is a router and WIFI in that device. If you left it unsecured, neighbors can pilfer your connection and even swat you offline.
Ask them how to enable WPA protection.

My laptop:

OS: Windows Vista Home Premium PC
Desktop:
Compaq Presario S6100NX
OS: Windows XP Home Edition
Modem: Actiontec GT701-WG

We don't use a router at present.
Using Mozilla FF Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.0.
Gecko/2009032609 Firefox/3.0.8 (Both PC's)
Issue:
After using the internet for anywhere from 10 minutes to half an hour we get bumped off, meaning that the pages slow way down just prior and then suddenly we get "Error Lander" pages and no internet connection.
The internet light goes off on the modem. We can reconnect by resetting the modem (unplug and then replug). The desktop is usually fine at that time, but I find that I have to restart my laptop to get reconnected.
This seems to have begun after a recent issue with connectivity (shortly after setting up the new laptop). The issue was resolved by Qwest customer service (an entire day of trial and error to get it right). UGH!!
We are wondering if you know what might be causing this issue and how we can deal with it. For several years until now, there has rarely been a connection issue, we are connected for months at a time. This is a royal PITB!
Thanks in advance for your kind help!
