General Question

Mar 29, 2015 7:45AM PDT

Hi my name is Robert, and i was thinking of going in to Information Technology/ Networking school at Ranken were a friend of mine went. I'm 34 yrs old and have no experience in computers other than normal personal use just basic skills. So my question is for your opinions on whether or not you feel I'm to old to try and get my foot in the door in Technology at my age. So basically after doing 2 yrs I'll be 36 going on 37 trying to get a job in the field. I'm just tired of breaking my back everyday for a living lol. Well that's it thanks for your answers in advance.

If you have good results and don't expect a start salary equal to that of someone who graduated 10 years earlier and made a normal career, I don't see any reason why it shouldn't work.

You're Not Too Old, But As With All Other Employment....

....those who will be picked first usually have experience AND knowledge. Sometimes, a little age shows that you have the experience needed to perform a job well, but if you can't back it up with background in the field, plus good decisions based on your education and background, then you won't last long.

Just a thought: I suggest finding a second job, maybe a part time job on the side, or maybe an volunteer internship where you gain such experience. Only problem: it takes time to gain experience.

Hope this helps.

first hand knowledge of what to expect is far better than anything else. Also could audit a course first to see if you really want to do it.

DO WHAT YOU WANT TO DO!!

Follow your dream, follow your heart! NO ONE is ever TOO OLD to do anything. Especially when it comes to education / learning and school, there is NO age limit. It is great that you figured out what you want to do now, than later. If you dont go to school now and continue to do your back breaking job, I assure that you will regret it or spend your life paying medical expenses for your back. Please have a lot of faith in yourself. You can do it!! Don't let ANYONE bring you down.

you could get your foot in the done at a entry level position after taking a couple of courses. My organization the help desk is the lowest level or IT and the the Desktop people that work with the Windows desktop. The rest of the IT positions are professional in the area's of servers, Databases, networks, Applications and security. We also have an area that used to be called Liason's which were almost like consultants that communicated to funtional non-IT area's on how to use technology to improve their processes. Then their titles Business Analysts and now they have added skilles in project mgmt. The BA's don't have to be technical but do understand technologies.
