GeForce GTX 555 Driver Update Not Installing

Apr 12, 2015 9:32AM PDT

Hey all. For the past couple of months, I have been getting the occasional error when I try to install the latest driver update, optional windows update for Intel product, and download .jar information. Other times, my pc downloads and installs just fine. Anyone have any idea what is going on?
Some clues as to what is happening: when I go to open the Nvidia GeForce Experience, a little error box comes up that says "Try Again Later". Another clue: After I opened the Nvidia and try to manually download update, it says "Unable to connect to Nvidia. Try again later."

My rig:
GPU GeForce GTX 555
CPU Intel Core i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz
Memory 8.00 GB Ram (7.90 GB usable)
Current Resolution 1920x1280, 60Hz
Driver Version 347.52
OS Windows 7 Home Premium

.jar? That's something I don't encounter on Nvidia updates. That is usually some JAVA issue and I've run updates without Java installed.

Try removing Java and scanning for malware.

Yes. .jar information doesn't download into an applet I use. Additionally, Windows updates for my Intel chip. And the Nvidia driver. Three different things, none of them related.

I never use Windows updates for drivers.

I found that breaks things.

That didn't work

Uninstalled Java (had three different versions for some odd reason), ran Slimcleaner, MalwareBytes, and CCCleaner. Re-installed Java.

No change.

More about the jar.

As Java changes to secure things, jar files can break. Report that one to its author.

As to drivers, try the old fashioned download a new one rather than in some app's updater.

what's your internet connection?
Apr 12, 2015 11:28AM PDT

wifi or by wire? I've seen people download linux distro ISO's and install, only to discover later their ISO download was hit up and that's the cause of all their installation problems. Maybe your updates are getting corrupted on the download due to a weak wifi signal or substandard ISP?

uninstall the Nvidia drivers and reinstall from the disc that came with the 550 than update directly from Nvidia .
I just updated my GPU without any problems

Well, I screwed the pooch. I tried a system restore (before the last three replies), hoping that would fix things. Well, it made things worse. Suddenly, I couldn't use Chrome or Firefox browsers (bad certificates or something), it said my Avast was outdated and I needed to find a new one, and I can't open simple applications like the java applet or Quick Note (nothing happens when I double click).

On top of that, I'm getting notifications of windows doing stuff I've never seen it do before. Like personalizing settings for media player (haven't used it in ages) and chrome and also setting up "unknown" USB devices. After it installs them, it then identifies what they are (keyboard, etc).

So, with all this new stuff, anyone have an updated guess on what is going on?

Chrome://Conflicts
Apr 12, 2015 1:14PM PDT

Now, I just had a page pop up that is titled "Chrome://Conflicts".

Says "Modules Loaded into Chrome" and, then, "This page lists all modules loaded into the main process and modules registered to load at a later point.", followed by a long list of things like "Audio Session 6.1.7600.16385 %systemroot%\system32\audioses.dll"

you cleaned too much with registry cleaners,
You might try uninstalling Avast , who knows, you might get lucky.
I'd have my restore media handy though.

I've never cleaned the registry. I know enough not to do that.

Wake up this morning after running a boot time scan to find that it stopped after just 10% .... It's also saying my version of Windows is now counterfeit ... I can't even get into my own profile. It set me up with a temporary one that it says will be deleted when I log out...

Re: scan
Apr 12, 2015 7:47PM PDT

- What exactly is the "boot time scan"?
- For the corrupted profile you log in into your spare admin account, and make a new one for daily use. After you copied your stuff from your old one, delete the old user from Control Panel. The corrupted profile will go with it.
- Counterfeit is a problem indeed. If you're sure it's legitimate, go back to your latest image backup (which should solve all your other issues to) or reinstall Windows.

Avast
Apr 12, 2015 7:54PM PDT

Boot time scan is a virus scan option on Avast that runs when you first boot up, before you go into Windows.

Trust me, my Windows is legitimate. How do I find the latest image backup?

Also, how do I log into the spare Admin account?

Re: issues
Apr 12, 2015 8:11PM PDT

- The Avast scan is clear. Then better not do it. It's optional. A rescue disk is a good alternative. See https://www.winhelp.us/avast-free-antivirus-boot-time-scan.html

- If you didn't make an image backup yourself, there is none. It's quite optional also. Some users do it with what Windows offers. Others use Acronis or Easeus. Others don't at all.

- A spare admin account is something you make yourself in Control Panel>Users. It's recommended to do this is one of the first things when you get a new machine. An alternative is to enable the administrator account that's built into Windows, as shown in http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/enable-the-hidden-administrator-account-on-windows-vista/

It might well be that reinstalling Windows is the only viable option for you. And if there are hardware issues (not impossible, given what you tell), that might fail.

I have RKill

(NT) I don't think so, but it's easy to try.

About RKill.
Apr 13, 2015 1:27AM PDT

It does NOT clean off pests. There's an article on what it does so I'll keep it short. RKill stops things/apps/maybebadthings that are known to interfere with malware scans.

It is not a repair in itself but helps us get ready for tools like MalwareBytes, SAS, ADWCleaner and other scanners.

And now a note about NINITE.
Apr 13, 2015 1:29AM PDT

Here's why I use NINITE -> https://ninite.com/

I even use it for Java updates since Oracle wants to push that toolbar. One wrong move and blammo I get a toolbar or more than I asked for.

So if there's a title I want that is offered by Ninite, that's what I use to get it and update as well. Why spend all the time scanning?

I can't tell if this charmed all the problems away.

But you can see why I use Ninite now.

Hopefully things are looking up.
