Geek Alert: Ubuntu 8.04 due soon

by Owyn / April 3, 2008 1:14 AM PDT

The hopefully final beta for Ubuntu 8.04 has been released and from all reports should be a Hardier Heron. ITWire has a good write up on the new features and focus on stability / Long Term Suuport for this release.

No exact release date in April has been confirmed, but, based on past history I just added a new task to my Calendar for Saturday 19 April, Test Ubuntu 8.04. Might slip by a week, but that's where my money is.

Gadgets, toys and the opportunity to purchase 'cool' rule supreme.
Linux distros come with no big pompous announcement gala, no million dollar advertising campaign and no free shwag, therefore it doesnt exist.

Better not to talk about it than get Don Reisinger as guest that day and have him try to explain it. (Too many tech people dont understand what the kernel is, what graphical desktop environments like KDE do, what distros are, what compositing window managers like Compiz are and how all these relate to each other.)

I had a chanced to run a beta with KDE 4 at friend's place and it was very nice. My dad is asking when we are going to update all the 7.04 versions they run so Ill give it a run this week.

Marketing

Ya, I agree. I think linux has overcome any last usability/compatibility barriers and is by far the sexiest OS out there these days. The main issue with garnering more attention is the complete lack of marketing. Perhaps Canonical should try to gather the press around for a party when they release new versions - or at least LTS ones.

I tried KDE4 but went back to my Gnome+Compiz combo, which I think is pretty tough to beat.

KDE4 is almost the dictionary definition of unstable

In reply to: Marketing

Kubuntu 8.04 with KDE3.5 is not a LTS release due to state of flux in KDE.

KDE4 is on the guaranteed to bleed edge.

I have an old HP junker that would be a great candidate for trying out Linux. It's probably about time.

I ordered it the day it came out. Call me old fashioned, but I love getting my Ubuntu CDs in the mail. So exciting!

One of the best French door fridges we've tested

A good-looking fridge with useful features like an auto-filling water pitcher and a temperature-adjustable "FlexZone" drawer. It was a near-flawless performer in our cooling tests.
