Gateway system question

Nov 25, 2003 2:40PM PST

I have sent a message to the gateway folks to ask how to restore the os on their mini atx computer with usb keyboard and mouse. It has no conventional hookups for a regular keyboard or mouse so i am curious how you get into the bios or restore the os without the keyboard or mouse support. Any help would be appreciated thanks in advance. Sincerly Joseph Boscoe

Joseph,

Whenever posting questions on these forums, please give us as much information about the computer as possible. The operating system you're trying to install and is this an upgrade or a reinstall??, processor speed, model number, types of drives available, etc. and any error messages, are all important items to know. Many computers have "Recovery CD's". Does this computer have such and are you going to use them or are you going to reinstall from a Windows CD of some sort. The more information you give us, the better informed our answer will be.

Hope this helps and let us know what you've got.

Its a Flexatx (bookend)model pc. It is Gateway model BROGP6-RW. It has a celeron pga 370 socket with a celeron 633. 64 megs ram windows 98se insstalled. I dont have the restore disks and would like to install from my own library of windows programs. It has only usb plugs on it and one video port to install a normal moniter no other connections can be made to it other than usb. Gateway hasnt replied yet to my question on reinstalling the OS. So i was curious if there was a way to install without the operating system working. I am assuming that i will have to install the HDD into a conventional pc and reinstall from there. Thanks in advance.

It appears like you haven't given me the actual Gateway Computer model number which would allow for a better search of their documents. In fact, almost all the Flex ATX computers I find have PS2 and serial ports, etc., enough that you could plug in regular devices to reformat and reinstall normally.

But here's a picture, of a similar Flex ATX board similar to the one you mention(Sorry, I can't find the specific model number you're giving me.):
MS-6312 Flex ATX WH11 System Board

And maybe you can do the searching yourself with something that looks familiar. Here's the link to Gateway's Desktop computer support page:

Hope this helps.

Hello again Mr Thomas. I had found out that the computer is built for rent-way by gateway. It has only usb ports absolutely no other ports are installed no pinouts at all. I had installed the w98second edition from another motherboard. and went to set it up back in the flex atx case and no way to start it up. I need to get some sort of usb support back into the machine so i can get it to boot up once again. I had contacted the gateway support site and they said i had to go back to rent-way to get any support. I contacted the rent-way folks and they they cant help either. I guess i am really not going to get it going today. But thanks for all of your help. Sincerly Joseph Boscoe
